CPAP Therapy Tips: Travelling with your CPAP

Summer is here and we have been getting lots of inquiries about travelling with CPAP. Most of the CPAP units manufactured after 2002 have a power supply that automatically adjusts to the various power supplies in different parts of the world. However, you will still need to use the correct adapter for the power supply socket of the country you are visiting. If you are camping or travelling by boat, you will need a battery pack and a converter. If you are unsure whether your CPAP or BiPAP has dual voltage, please contact our staff at Clinical Sleep Solutions to find out more.

Other things to remember before your travel with your CPAP:

  • Carry a travel letter from your CPAP provider
  • Put CPAP in carry-on luggage and empty all the water from the humidifier water chamber
  • Consider bringing an extension power cord
  • Bring spare fuses (depending on model)
  • Unit might need altitude adjustment; check with your CPAP provider

If you use a Respironics M-Series CPAP system, we recommend using a Respironics Portable CPAP Battery Pack. This portable battery pack by Respironics weighs 15 lbs and it has everything you need for travel. It will work with most CPAP machines, however run times will vary based upon your pressure setting and type of machine used. Cigarette ligther interface for ease of connection to your machine is also available.

If you use a Respironics REMstar Series CPAP, you may use the Respironics REMstar Shielded DC Power Cord. It fits the REMstar Plus, REMstar Pro, Pro 2, Auto, M Series Plus, M Series Pro.

If you use a Puritan Bennett Goodknight 420 Series, a travel cigarette lighter adaptor is available.

If you use a Fisher & Paykel CPAP unit, F&P doesn’t have its own adaptor cable for travel. Users can use the Respironics REMstar shielded DC Power Cord which is compatible with the SleepStyle 200 and 600 series.

ResMed S8 Series CPAP users can use a ResMed DC-12 Converter for the S8 Series, DC cord for the S8 Series, and a cigarette lighter interface. ResMed 150 Watt Inverter for teh S8 Series converts DC power into 110 – 120V AC power. If a humidifier is used as well, the inverter will be more suitable.

If you are looking for a brand new unit that’s built for travelling, camping or boating, may we suggest AEIOmed’s Everest CPAP. The Everest 3 comes with an optional portable battery that will power both the CPAP and the heated humidifier throughout the night. Plus, because the Everest 3 and battery are fully integrated, the battery automatically recharges when the Everest 3 is plugged into an electrical outlet or any 12-volt power source using the optional mobile power adapter.
